Letter from a Reader

We love receiving letters from Friends, here is a delightful one we received from Betty Jenkins, it is transcribed below.

Dear Friends of the Common,

Having lived all my life (1921 onwards) in Tunbridge Wells, I have many memories.

In the 1930s Hairbells [Harebells - ed] grew on the Common – this may interest Ian Beavis. My father, Clarence Burnett, born 1892, remembered Mt Edgecombe Road being known as Donkey Drive, as people wishing to go uphill to Mt Ephraim used to hire donkeys.

My father played cricket for Linden Park CC on the Higher Ground and football for Mt Pleasant on the Lower Ground. “The Mounts” as they were known won the Charity Cup in 1923 I believe.

Yours sincerely – Betty Jenkins

If you’d like to send us a letter then the postal address is on your latest issue of Common Ground.
